The simple elegance of 1×1 Studio
May 24, 2018
Candid’s Fashion & Grooming Editor, Ross Pollard explores the debut collection from 1×1 Studio.
As men’s fashion has grown there has been a yearning chasm between the youthful playfulness of collections for those in their teens and very early twenties and the more staged elegance and subtle tastes of collections aimed at those of a more venerable place on the calendar of life. Into that void has stepped 1×1 Studio, the London-based label with their debut Kidult collection.
It picks up on pop notes from the 80s mixed with knitwear and more formal statement pieces. Bright colours, deeper hues and giant checks run through the looks creating a cohesive capsule wardrobe. Particular highlights for me are the coats, and the structure they bring into the collection – a fantastic contrast against the soft looseness of the heavier woollen pieces.
Round necks and touches of Midwestern Americana are presented as a nod to the more youthful client, but cross boundaries into staples such as a rather stunning bright yellow cardigan. Textured patterns create interest and depth on the jumpers.
Debut collections are powerful statements, it’s when a designer first has the opportunity to show the world their mission statement and style. 1×1 Studio have created an incredibly wearable group of looks and are adding to London’s burgeoning collection of great young labels. I can’t wait to see more from them.
