Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2016
June 15, 2015
Taken to the very depths of the Waterloo tunnels, the crowd at the SS16 Alexander McQueen show were treated to Sarah Burton’s many miracles of the deep. The McQueen man for SS16 is a leviathan, once fabled by the hardened explorers that made shape of the world, now brought to life in another flawless collection, poop deck hair to match.
The show was teaming with schools of detailing and intricacies that only House McQueen can deliver in battened down glory, look after look. Themes running throughout included eyelet portholes cut into coats and belts, maritime illustrations intricately applied to fabrics, gill-like rouching on A-line knits, and brocaded lovers woven into heavy two piece ensembles. A seaside soundscape of waves became intersected the with the cries of gulls that echoed, immersively, around the caves. The show spoke of the multilayered narrative of a seafarer’s harsh and prismatic existence, mixed folklore and function, a legendary sea shanty of epic execution.
