Recently graduated from The University of Westminster, designer Ashley Williams has been creating quite the storm in the fashion circuit, with her collection of nostalgic Americana prints.
The use of print has become a signature of Williams’ work, but in a more upbeat and humorous way than some of the print powerhouses of the industry (Katrantzou, Pilotto etc) – her clever collections have featured a kitsch mix of ice-cream and lipstick printed tailored garments. Notably inspired by America, her collections have touched on the ice-cream diners and country music stars of Texas.
Her design aesthetic is playful and witty, but also luxuriously trashy – her use of print-on-print in matching cigarette trousers and skirts is more playful than chic. The designer’s autumn/winter ‘13 collection featured in the Fashion East show at London Fashion Week showcased a mix of vibrantly coloured, tomato red and green pea coats, Elvis Presley printed shift dresses teamed with chequered, teddy bear rucksacks and Converse. The collection was refreshingly light-hearted and classically cool. Williams is able to confine the quintessential glamour of Texas and playfulness of the classic America.
One word to describe Williams’ designs is definitely fun and so we look forward to see what the young designer has to offer in September for her spring/summer ’14 collection.
