Bang Bang Oriental Foodhall: The new ‘Chinatown’ of North London opens in Colindale

For those in the know, Colindale has always been known as a hub for the Chinese community and sinophiles alike with the iconic Oriental City being a focal point for the community until its unfortunate closure in 2008 due to redevelopment purposes and subsequent demolition. The site had been struggling to find a viable alternative until recently when the Royal China Group came to the rescue and backed the opening of Bang Bang Oriental Foodhall.

Designed by Stiff + Trevillion, this new complex is one of the most eco-friendly dining venues you will find in London along with a multitude of culinary options, it is also a community space and contains offices for local Chinese community liaison. Further down the line, there will be shops opening as well. For those reminiscing about the old Oriental City, the new complex, unfortunately, doesn’t have a stupendous oriental supermarket (not even a metro-sized version); there is only a Morrisons nearby.
The star of the show is the dazzling array of food stalls amassed by the Royal China Group team. For those living in North London, an arduous trek into central London is no longer vital to sample authentic Asian cuisine. Those who crave their weekly dim sum fix should head straight for Royal China One 68 DIM SUM. The little parcels of deliciousness are better than ever here from intricate dumplings to pillowy buns and a testament to why the Chinese community consistently pick the Royal China Group as the place to visit for top quality dim sum.
However, variety is the spice of life, so at the food hall, there is also Japanese, Malaysian, Indian, Vietnamese, Taiwanese and Korean cuisine. Highlights you should look out for include the famous Cantonese roast duck from Four Seasons, where people regularly queue for over half an hour at their Bayswater branch.
The Instagram sensation that is Wonderful Patisseries – that masterminded the green tea ice cream served in the fish-shaped waffle cone – is also present. If you are looking for a more formal restaurant environment, there is the Golden Dragon on the ground floor that can provide three hundred covers and is perfect for large-scale celebrations like weddings and Christmas parties.
With so much food generation naturally comes food waste; at Bang Bang Oriental Foodhall they have biofuel cylinders that convert this waste into energy regeneration in order to minimize the carbon emissions.
This new site is going to be a proud monument for all lovers of Asian cultures for many decades to come.

Bang Bang Oriental Foodhall is located at 399 Edgware Road, Colindale, NW9 0FH
