In the past few years, there has been something of a revival of the Barbour label, with their classic waxed coats resting on the shoulders of university preps, Sloane Square Rangers and country folk alike. The hybrid of functionality and timeless style is something few garments can claim so well. But the AW15 collection from this traditional brand shows that it can do so much more than just an evergreen waxed coat.
The label has lost none of its outdoorsy feel, that’s for sure. Each piece – whether that’s the Prince of Wales patterned blazer in a burnished bronze, the camouflage parka, the well-pocketed hunting jacket or even the thick knit socks – firstly declares its purpose and functionality before it allows you to appreciate its style, colour or print. These are the sort of garments that will stay in your wardrobe for a long time. There is a lot of layering in this collection – overcoats lie over padded gillette jackets which sit over roll neck jumpers or shirts. The trousers, in a slightly more relaxed form of tailoring closer to a chino but not quite, sit above the ankle or are tucked into socks, which works surprisingly well. The collection is solid, purposeful and dignified.
This latest offering comes just at the right time; before the Barbour name becomes synonymous with Middle Class attire, it brings out a collection that has huge appeal across the spectrum, from the man battling the elements to the man battling the style stakes. Whether country pumpkin or city slicker, the AW15 Barbour collection is a strong one that is sure to please.
