Ahead of our next print issue – The Luxury Issue – which launches over London Fashion Week Men’s in June, fashion photographer Emma Woolrych shot the multi-talented model, presenter and everything in between: Barney Banks, on the rooftop of Century Club and an exclusive interview with Barney will feature in the new issue, but for now:

While we were at Century Club, we caught up with the MD, Ronald Holmberg to get the inside scoop on the newfangled space.

Hi Ronald; thanks for speaking to us. Why was the Century Club roof terrace refitted?

After recent growth and with the club becoming increasingly popular, we felt it was time to enlarge and upgrade our facilities for our members. We have extended our smoking terrace by an extra twenty covers, and the main rooftop terrace is now kitted out with a brand new, electric retractable roof. This enables us to offer a beautiful rooftop space all year round, keeping our guests warm in the winter, and offering an incredible sun-trap in the summer – all at the click of a button. We have also reconfigured the terrace, to increase the area by an additional fifteen covers. Towards the end of May our members can look forward to a bigger bar on the roof – reducing wait times and offering an informal seating option in the company of our bartenders.

Who designed it?

We have a very creative in-house designer, Gary Messider, who’s ideas and flair are presented throughout the entire club. Gary is an incredibly versatile designer, who never fails to impress us with each and every concept.

Is there a signature cocktail?

To coincide with the new roof, we’ve developed a series of cocktails based on iconic movies and occasions from the 1900’s. Whether it’s the allure of the Hollywood leading lady or the adrenaline of the fast-paced action, we’ve bottled some of our favourite moments and poured them into a chilled glass. We invite members to sit back, take in the London Skyline and reminisce over the glamour of a powerful hundred years of filmmaking.

How many people can fit up there?

The total capacity of the roof terrace is a hundred and fifty, with an additional thirty capacity on the smoking terrace. It offers an idyllic setting for breakfast meetings, evening soirées, brunch parties… and is the perfect setting for relaxed cocktails in the evening.

What’s the most exciting event that’s been up there since the reopening?

We have had so many events that it’s difficult to choose, however personal favourites of mine have included, hosting brunch parties with DJs Route 94 and Riva Starr, as well as a truly beautiful wedding. We’re looking forward to Secondcity performing on the roof towards the end of this month, and the whole summer is already packed full of superb events, including our mid-summer party, London Pride, the launch of Candid Magazine’s Luxury Issue, regular brunch parties and weekly live music events.

Holmberg also told us that there are also huge refurbishment plans scheduled over the next sixteen months for the rest of the club: Century has partnered up with reciprocal clubs and retailers to offer its members exclusive privileges including partnership’s with Hackett, a full-concierge service, and partnerships with private members’ clubs across the UK and throughout the globe.
