Book a panoramic villa on the charming island of Gozo
June 30, 2019
If you are linguistically challenged like me and looking for a relaxing holiday with family or friends, one option to consider is visiting the magical island of Gozo and hiring out your own private villa. If you have enough guests, often a private villa is more affordable and spacious than a shoe box-sized hotel room.
Gozo is only a short ferry ride away from Malta but much less commercial with some of the most secluded beaches available in the region. We visited the island recently with 2 groups of people and hired out Villa Twilight and Villa Panorama with James Villa Holidays.
Villa Twilight is on the outskirts of Marsalforn with scintillating views of the Pergla valley and Ghajn Barrani Bay. There are 6 bedrooms and 7 showers with one room having their own private gym; some of the decor was slightly dated but the pièce de résistance here is the mesmerising outdoor area with a well-sized swimming pool lined with soothing palm trees and one of the best views of the Gozitan sunset.
For those who like their amenities and accommodation ultra-modern, Villa Panorama is the luxury accommodation you should book. It has an outdoor swimming pool as well as a heated indoor pool, a cinema room, a wine cellar and a fine mixture of traditional Gozitan architecture such as the quaint spiral staircase mixed with one of the most contemporary open kitchens you will ever come across.
There are plenty of activities that can be arranged at these villas including having your own yoga teacher as well as a private chef cooking a lavish tasting menu for you and your guests. The chef we used cooked one of the most impressive Cacio e Pepe I’ve ever had including a cheese wheel that was thicker than a truck tire.
Hiking is a much-loved pastime in Gozo and from these villas, you can hike to the sandy shores of Ramla bay or if you are feeling slightly lethargic, there are Tuk Tuks available for hire which can transport you quickly to your desired destination whilst you admire the scenic countryside.
The must-do activity in Gozo is a boat cruise around the island to see the many fascinating caves that have formed around the islands and travelling to the famed blue lagoon near Comino Island to swim in the crystal-clear, turquoise shallow waters. The film, The Count of Monte Cristo was famously filmed in this area.
There is no shortage of dining options on Gozo with quirky ideas like an outdoor picnic with the company Gozo picnic being increasingly popular. Whilst, Ta’ Philip is widely regarded as the best restaurant on the island with their focus on using locally sourced ingredients and traditional cooking methods like wood-fired ovens. With such splendid weather, it is unsurprising to find winery visits equally popular with the tourists as well as locals and one such to consider is Ta’ Mena Food Boutique and Winery. Not only can you try Gozitan wine, but also cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil, pure Gozo honey, jams, and cheeses. If you are looking for a restaurant with a view, then check out Il Kartell in Marsalforn with a drool-worthy seafood-focused menu and uninterrupted views of the crystal waters of the Mediterranean.
Finally, if you want the ultimate spa day break, take a visit to the 5-star Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz. This oasis of rejuvenation has a spa area in excess of 1,700 sqm with 9 spa, 5 traditional Ayurveda treatment rooms, two heated indoor pools, an indoor jacuzzi, relaxation areas, and a steam chamber. Their treatments have a seasonally focused menu so you can get a spring massage focused on detoxing, whilst summer is all about balancing, autumn is about relaxing and the winter message is all about energising.
With a myriad of activities and accommodation choices on offer in Gozo and English as one of their main languages, this is one island escape you must consider for your next vacation.
