Candid Magazine’s twelfth issue – The Fashion Issue – had an entire section dedicated to hotel’s that have been touched by the fashion world, from the Bulgari and Claridge’s in London to Maison Champs Élysées and Hôtel du Petit Moulin in Paris to Hotel ICON in Hong Kong to the Armani Dubai, and now British designer, Jasper Conran joins the ranks. L’Hôtel Marrakech is now open for business and it is a stylish slice of calm in a bustling Moroccan medina.

Local craftspeople have historically restored a centrally located nineteenth-century riad in refined, 1930’s-inspired elegance. Five suites surround a courtyard garden with swimming pool – a rare luxury for the city, and it’s topped with a flora-rich roof terrace devised for lounging in sun, dining in a private pergola and taking in the views of the nearby Atlas mountain range. High ceilings supported by whitewashed walls and accented by flowing voile curtains set the tranquil backdrop to the art, textiles and antique furnishings from Conran’s own collection – many originally acquired from Yves Saint Laurent – while little details like hand finished Egyptian cotton bedding and towels nod to the mark of a fashion designer.

A formidable force in fashion, Conran is credited as one of the founders of London Fashion Week and he now stamps his name on menswear, luggage, interiors, fragrance and of course womenswear, which he first launched in 1978. In 2008 he received an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to retail, and he was honoured with the Lawrence Olivier Award for Costume Design in 1991 – he has created costumes and sets for thirteen productions spanning opera, ballet and theatre.

Conran served as chairman and creative director of The Conran Shop for three years. A London, and now Paris-based retailer of premium furniture, lighting and home accessories, he was charged with energising and repositioning the business, and it’s clear the time at The Conran Shop planted the seed for horizontal moves into interiors and luxury accommodation.

L’Hôtel Marrakech is Conran’s first hotel. Stay in the Casablanca and Fez suites for £363 a night or the Alisah, Zagora and Tangier suites for £295 a night.
