Julien Macdonald To Debut Menswear Collection in London
September 7, 2015
Knitwear specialist and head of his namesake label, Julian Macdonald is branching out into menswear at this September’s London Fashion Week. The London-established, Welsh designer will reveal 12 to 14 men’s looks during his scheduled womenswear show on September 19. The designs are rumoured to include digitally printed t-shirts inspired by a recent jaunt over to Bali and a spate of jumpers to show off those knitting skills of his. Macdonald is famous for his love of textures and intricate patterns, working separates into contrasting yet totally meshable juxtapositions. The Macdonald man should be into bold fashion choices.
“It isn’t gentleman,” he told WWD. “I’ve taken inspiration from my own clothes and things I’ve seen guys in London wearing, especially in the East End, the Shoreditch area of London where the most fashionable kids hang out. It’s almost like a unisex of kind of fashion, really. So I think it’s interesting but it’s not a tailored gentleman. If you want a suit, don’t come to me.”
Macdonald has been showing at London Fashion Week for 17 years without ever dipping into the menswear haute fashion department; so this is rather a big deal for the red carpet favourite who has been dressing the likes of Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Kate Hudson and Kim Kardashian in sexy, gossamer-like numbers. Maybe next year’s round of red carpet events will see male actors rush to wear the latest Julien Macdonald collection. Just don’t expect any Don Draper types; Shoreditch-inspired Hipster types only. We’re betting on Shia LaBeouf to nab himself the first outing.
