Think “tequila,” and you might recall debaucherous nights with blurred edges and a salt and citrus aftertaste. But we like to think we’ve grown up, and so too has our old friend – well, Mexico’s premier tequila distiller Patrón certainly has done anyway. A partnership with Lalique, masters of French crystal, has seen Patrón launch an exclusive (and indeed, expensive) series of ultra-luxury bottled tequila.

The latest development in the brand’s “Art of Patrón” platform, which recognises commitment to craft with a focus on culinary arts, mixology, music and culture, the collaboration with Lalique bases its foundations on the brands’ mutual values; creativity, craftsmanship and artistry.

Patrón en Lalique: Serie 1 features an exceptional blend of the rarest spirits hand-picked from the Hacienda Patron distillery, a barrel aging room in the hills of Mexico and bottled in a limited edition crystal decanter designed by Lalique’s famed artisans. Combining clear and frosted finishes in signature Lalique style, the decanter shows off the amber glow of the spirit and features a crystal stopper inspired by Mexico’s native Weber Blue Agave plant, from which tequila is produced, in the shape of the piña, the heart of the agave.

Founded in 1888, Lalique is a longstanding manufacturer in traditional French glassmaking, where skilled craftsmen produce timeless pieces, each one individually blown, pressed, cut, polished and signed. Silvio Denz, Chairman and CEO of Lalique commented, “Creating such a unique decanter is very challenging and represents countless hours of work due to the finesse of the design.”

The spirit in question is an extra añejo tequila, aged for four years in a combination of new American and used French oak barrels, resulting in a flavours such as sweet caramel, honey, vanilla, dried fruits and nuts, with balanced notes of agave and oak. Sealed in its Lalique decanter and cocooned in a leather display case with gemstone details, this might just be the most sophisticated tequila your liquor cabinet has ever seen.

Limited to just 500 individually numbered bottles worldwide, Patrón en Lalique Serie 1 retails at £4,950 and can be ordered through Patron’s concierge service at concierge@patronspirits.com
