Louis Vuitton America’s Cup
July 22, 2016
Sun splashes; thundering and roaring winds of twelve to fifteen knots and a record-breaking crowd of over 200,000 fans at Navy Pier on Lake Michigan set the stage for the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series in Chicago. For the first time in America’s Cup History, the setting is Chicago’s summer, gleaming against its golden sand-coloured scenography. Louis Vuitton has been the principle partner of the prestigious race for thirty-two years, holding a “a shared passion for conquest and innovation, a shared love of travel and commitment to excellence.” Six teams entered in the 35th America’s Cup, featuring defending America’s Cup champion Team Oracle USA, Land Rover Bar (Great Britain) Artemis Racing (Sweden), Emirates Team New Zealand, SoftBank Team Japan and Groupama Team France.
Deep blue waves resonated skywards in a prelude to the America’s Cup as Sean Tucker, the master pilot for Team Oracle, defied gravity across the Chicago skyline with adrenaline-fueled aerobatic skills from a bi-plane before the commencement of national anthem.
The fleet was closely bunched, and blasting a new course record, hitting 34.17kts of boat speed in the freshwater lake, was Land Rover Bar (Great Britain). However, Artemis Racing (Sweden) won the trophy with a three-point win. The weekend’s performance placed Artemis from sixth to fourth place in the overall preliminary standings.
Blazing at high speed with a starboard tack approach and a breeze funnelling through the famous skyline from the southeast – the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series is the pinnacle of racing and engineering ingenuity. “Chicago is the heart of America and a great venue for racing,” said Nathan Outteridge (Artemis), while Sir Ben Ainslie (Land Rover Bar) commented, “These five teams are the best in the sport of sailing.”
A symbol of trailblazing spirit, the 35th America’s Cup will be held in June 2017 on the Great Sound of Bermuda.
