“Ladies and gentlemen hold on to your wigs cause this bish is back” announces Marika Hackman on her Instagram shortly before the release of her vibrant new single i’m not where you are.

It’s a liberating statement for a liberating single. Two years have passed since the Londoner has released any new material but this time it’s out with the whimsical and in with the bold.

Co-produced by David Wrench, i’m not where you are is another example of Hackman using her words as her greatest weapon. Lyrically she explores break-ups and self-sabotaging relationships. She repeatedly sings I gave it all away for the lowest play / I think I lost my mind / I’m not where you are. When asked about what these lyrics means to her, Hackman explains “it’s that feeling of not trusting ones emotions because you can’t seem to get to the same place as the other person.  On the surface it seems like an arrogant ‘everybody falls in love with me’ kind of song but its actually incredibly lonely, introspective and self-deprecating.”

i’m not where you are features an upbeat 80’s-inspired pop sound with laid-back, languorous vocals. At the centre of the track, Hackman deploys slicing guitars and synthesisers that recall the off-kilter sounds of New Order and OMD, while her natural delivery and sensuous tone offer a dreamlike quality to the track.

Once again exploring new territories with her sound, Hackman has thrown off expectations with her remarkable new single. Listen below.
