New Music: Hyena
February 7, 2015
‘Mental Home‘ is the debut single from rising new rockers Hyena. It is an uptempo, punchy track that is teeming with angst driven energy, fuelled from the constraints of growing up in a small English town. The boys: Jacob Ball, Joshua Taylor, Dom Farley and Reuben Gwilliam, herald from Telford and have worked hard to make a name for themselves within an environment not exactly nourishing musical talent. Reinventing themselves as Hyena, they have been playing together since the age of thirteen, first in the band Weatherbird. With almost a decade of experience performing as a group, these guys know how to work together to create a slick alternative sound.
For the song they have teamed up with Royal Blood producer Tom Daigety and it has been mastered by John Davis, who has worked with the likes of Led Zeppelin on their most recent remastering, and female fronted London quartet Wolf Alice. With a team like this behind them it is certain these lads are being given the best start that they could hope for. The track itself screams to be heard, with crashing drums and growling guitar rifts. It really brings the teenage years rushing back, revisting memories of rocking out to Nirvana. Jacob Ball’s vocals are full of emotion as he growls “I wanted you to sell me out”, his husky voice is without fault and has tones that could easily be compared to the likes of Kurt Cobain.
‘Mental Home‘ is an exceptional taste of what is to come from this group and they are sure to make a real statement in the rock scene in 2015. The four piece are set to be touring with Turbowolf and Dolomite Minor throughout April and, now being tipped for big things, they are sure to be worth catching before they make a name for themselves.
