Though he is best known as frontman of New York City band Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Huey Morgan and his Saturday morning slot on BBC 6 Music means he is no stranger to getting us in the mood for the weekend. Tonight, he is swapping NYC for Shoreditch and helping relaunch The Holy Birds restaurant by taking over the downstairs Mule Bar. Here at Candid, we got a sneak preview of what sort of tracks to expect from his DJ set.

Dr. Dog – The Truth I love this jam for all it isn’t as well as what it makes me feel. It’s got that old school Philly soul influence with really smart rock arrangements and a hook you can hang a wet towel on.

Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson – Superman Lover This joint has been part of my life since- damn forever mang! I’m a guitar player and this here dude is a master on that way-wha and the track is a crazy groove.

Billy Preston – That’s The Way God Planned It If you could put together a band like this dude had on this track, the world would break in half! George Harrison produced the song and played rhythm guitar, Clapton is playing lead guitar, Ginger Baker is the drummer and on bass is the one and only Keith Richards. Amazing!James Brown – Down And Out In New York City As far as JB goes this joint is more real than most. Being a native New Yorker, I can attest to the fact that NYC will fuck you up and move over you like a taxi cab going 100 miles per hour down 14th street at midnight on a Saturday night. And that’s what James is about here.

Old Dirty Bastard – Shimmy Shimmy Ya Although this is technically a Wu joint, ODB breaks the cast and moves in a direction that up until that point was a road less travelled by rappers. It’s got the hook and it’s got ODB’s amazing psycho flow.

Buddy Holly – All My Love Aside from being one of the inventors of rock and roll music, this cat was one of the first dudes to write arrange, perform and produce his own music. A forerunner of greats like Prince who developed their music outside of the music business loop.

Bad Brains – Soulcraft Bad Brains are, to me, one of the best bands ever! This track was a big part of my life when I was a U.S. Marine. I had the cassette of this album in my pack and would jam to it before any action. A cool side note is that the drummer on this album was not the usual guy, Earl. It was a New York cat named Mackie, who I knew when I was a kid and who later became the drummer in FLC from ‘98-‘02.

The Meters – Find Yourself This band are the most inherently funky band ever to record music. The NOLA vibe was captured by the late, great Allen Toussaunt and became a blueprint for me as a young writer to create tangible jams.
