Richard James AW14
September 8, 2014
Renowned for his bespoke tailoring, and ability to capture a London boy’s charm in a piece of clothing, Richard James has created a fashion empire based upon his own philosophy. His design philosophy is to create classic clothing, but to also push through existing barriers and boundaries through experimenting with fabrics, bold use’s of pattern and colour. Though James’ trademark garment is a three piece suit, this season nods towards a more casual collection.
An evident influence from what Richard James himself calls the ‘renegade rockers’ is seen through his use of leather jackets, workwear style outerwear and ankle grazing trousers. “Our Autumn/Winter ’14 collection salutes the New Edwardians and the dawn of the dandy, the sharp-edged, highly stylised ‘50s explosion of self expression that shocked a nation and unleashed the brave, unbridled new world of British street style” he explains.
The collection overall is distinct, defined and centres around a deeper base of colours than usually seen with his work. Chocolate and coffee browns, dark khaki and rich burgundy seamlessly glide through tailoring, knitwear and casual wear. Teal and turquoise do however make a small appearance to break up the collection and ease the pain of heavy shades of brown.
The stand out garment, by a mile, is a blue biker cut leather jacket. Its cut is traditional and stays close to it’s long-established roots, however the use of colour is genius. The piece holds a strong sense of British heritage. He has created the modern day mod, and given his work a more edgy look. It is certainly one of his strongest collections to date.
Close in at second place is a glittery burgundy two piece suit; it’s an extra flashy detail to what could have been a rather boring piece of tailoring. Teamed with a crisp white shirt and bow around the collar, the creation salutes to more daring Richard James that invites the modern day man on a stylish journey.
Richard James AW14 collection has truly combined two historic styles ; the intertwining of British heritage and rocker styles has created a new, modern day mod. Savile Row is renowned for classic men, clean tailoring and an air of superiority. Now a new man walks paves the cobbles of the row, with a tight silhouette in tow, he means business.
