Amidst the sophistication and re-dandification of menswear that is so evident throughout LC:M, Soulland’s AW15 collection adds a little sense of kitsch and welcome easiness to the proceedings. It’s one of those brands that doesn’t take itself too seriously but is seriously good at what it does; relaxed independent pieces that are wearable without losing their fashion edge.
There are the classic offerings- shearling collared aviator jackets, single-breasted overcoats, two-piece suits in check or pinstripe- that have that timeless quality of an investment piece. But mixed in with that is the more fun stuff; the Gate Entry sign printed shirt, the patchwork polka dot trousers, the space printed jacket, the Exotic Erotic polo tee, the illustrated mac coat. They’re uncontrived pieces; light, a tad novelty, something of a relief. Paired with bleached and ripped jeans, it’s almost a carelessness about style, and it really works. The overall effect is very masculine; there is a hint of subculture swagger, geek chic and the 90s, all mixed together in this sartorial melting pot.
There is a greater focus on the attitude than the garment in the AW15 offering from Soulland – it’s about wearing the clothes with abandon rather than allowing the clothes to define you. It’s not ground-breaking in any way, but it is good.
