Tibits – Changing London’s Restaurant Scene One Plate at a Time

Show after show after show spread the across city over London Fashion Week, can mean too much focus on ‘getting there’ and not enough focus on eating. Cue Tibits – a centrally-located vegetarian and vegan restaurant. Tibits is quick, easy, healthy and good, so there are no excuses next time the fashion machine rolls into town.

Tucked behind Regent Street in the mini enclave of food and drink, Heddon Street, Tibits is a Swiss import that puts a contemporary spin on healthy eating. When the Candid team went along, the restaurant was absolutely buzzing and it’s clearly no secret to the ‘fashion crowd’; we saw Amesh Wijeseker, designer of eponymous menswear brand, Amesh at a neighbouring table.

Eating well has never looked so good. Upon entering you clock the polished cement flooring, a wall of windows, plenty of plant life, a mirror ball dangling overhead and of course the boat-shaped central table stacked with plates of Carbonara with smoked tofu, beetroot, oyster and mushroom udon, mixed greens, spicy Thai coconut soup, curried quinoa salad, lentil salads. It’s a pay-by-weight operation and Candid’s host for the evening explains how it works – you grab a table and peruse the menu. The most important part about this is that your table is given a numbered card. Commit that number to memory, or just keep the card with you. Once you know what you want to drink (there is a full range of fresh-pressed juices, cocktails and mocktails), you head to the bar – pub-style and the drinks put on your numbered card.

Next step is food. That food table you spotted on entry is where you’re headed. This is where you can really let your inner herbivore shine. Take a plate and load it up. You then take it to that bar where you got your drinks, place it on a scale and it’s tallied onto your numbered card.

Eat. Everything is fresh and delicious – you can’t really go wrong, unless you have an aversion or an allergy.

Once you’ve had your fill of mains, it’s time for pudding and an entire section of the central table is dedicated to it – bread and butter pudding, orange and ginger bake, Chai chocolate cream. The desserts did taste as if quite a lot of the sugar had been axed from the recipes, but that’s a good thing, isn’t it?

The Tibits environment is light-filled and chilled-out, a place were you could sit for hours, continually adding sustenance to your numbered card, but alas, London Fashion Week was calling. Candid were there on a Sunday, but our host hinted that Tibits can get wild on Fridays and Saturdays – think DJs and a spinning of the aforementioned mirror ball.

We’ll definitely be back, and the good thing about Tibits is that there are two locations in London (Bankside and Heddon Street), so whether you’re south of the river or north, you can get a healthy (and fun) meal. There are also multiple locations around Switzerland if you’re feeling really adventurous. And the restaurants are guided by the seasons, so depending on how often you visit, new flavours await.
