Topman Design Spring/Summer 2016
June 12, 2015
Promised another throwback from their last Seventies show with the invitation enclosed as a sleeve cassette tape case, Topman today opened London Collections: Men with a show that had moved on and was distinctly Eighties.
Candid cover star Jim Chapman, David Gandy and Nick Grimshaw, watched as the collection – entitled Northern Surf – harked back to the decade that made them but reinvented it in a fresh way that looked right for now – or Spring 2016. Models with relaxed bed hair, to a thumping soundtrack and screaming sirens, walked out in retro sports zip-ups and denim jackets patched and studded all over, legs either clad in slim jeans or wide pleated trousers. Patches with slogans were also on sports vests, “let’s riot” one of the patches’ phrases that referenced the punk roots. “Danz like you’re a northern” we were told.
Red, white and blue then moved into a strange but great striped suit/pyjama hybrid. Relaxed and wide on the bottom and cropped on top, as in a Harrington and bomber shape, the beige and plaster pink palette looks fresh and similar shapes in grey puppytooth-like fabrics had a definite mod influence. Ice cream pastels then took over in sportswear – cagouls and short shorts – and replaced double denim with double patching in tees, trousers, and a patchprint cape.
Then it was back to black to finish the show with open weave knits and relaxed tailoring in black, grey and monochrome stripes, but brightened with the recurring patch prints and paint brush strokes, and a pink leather biker jacket that is currently taking the number one spot on our SS16 wishlist.
